Please join us for The Third Annual First Friday Art Walk Event “In Plein Sight”
Plein air painting is a French term that translates to "open air" painting. It refers to the practice of creating art outdoors, directly from nature and the surrounding environment. Plein air painters often work in natural landscapes such as parks, beaches, mountains, and forests, capturing the beauty of the world around them. The practice of plein air painting dates back to the 19th century when artists such as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir began to paint outdoors. These artists sought to capture the fleeting effects of light and color that can only be seen in nature, rather than relying on studio work or imagination.
Today, Plein air painting is still a popular form of art that allows artists to observe their surroundings firsthand and create unique, lively pieces with a sense of immediacy and spontaneity. By working directly from the landscape, artists can capture the energy and atmosphere of a place, conveying the emotions and experiences they feel while painting. Plein air painting has become a beloved pastime for many artists, who find inspiration in the beauty of the natural world and the freedom of painting en plein air.
Join us as we feature this technique throughout the city of Gulfport with a First Friday Art Walk, a Plein Air Painting Workshop on the beach, a Creative Kids event and a Juried Art Show. Submissions will be judged by Janie Haskins, April’s featured artist at The Brenda McMahon Gallery. Prizes will be awarded for Merit, Second Place and Best In Show. There are several ways to participate this year. Select you preferred option below and you will be routed to the appropriate application.
