GECKO QUEEN
Who Will Be Gulfport's Next Gecko Queen?

Shelley Cardoos
Dear Gulfport,My heart is full now that I have found this vibrant, creative, and quirky town that I proudly call home. Gulfport, to me, is not just a place on the map; it's a kaleidoscope of colors, a haven for artists, a playground for the free-spirited, and a community that embraces individuality with open arms.I often say, "Tie dye is the camouflage of Gulfport," and it couldn't be more true. The streets are alive with an abundance of colors - from the brightly painted buildings to the eclectic art on every corner.I affectionately refer to Gulfport as “art camp town” because it truly feels like a creative sanctuary, a place where imagination runs wild and art is not just a hobby but a way of life. As an artist myself, I find endless inspiration in the vibrant murals, the local shops, and the lively art and music scene throughout the town. For me, Gulfport is more than just a geographical location; it's a state of mind. It's a place where I can be my true self, where my love for color and creativity is not just accepted but celebrated. It's a town that feels like a perpetual summer camp - full of laughter, music, and endless possibilities.I am Shelley, a lover of all things artistic, a dancer, a musician, and a proud member of this eclectic community. I am running for the title of "Gecko Queen of Gulfport," not just as a fun title, but as a testament to my deep love for this town and its people. What truly sets Gulfport apart is its locals - warm, welcoming, and always ready to embrace newcomers with open arms. The sense of community here is infectious, and I feel incredibly grateful to be a part of it.In conclusion, Gulfport is not just a town; it's a way of life. It's a place where creativity flourishes, where individuality is celebrated, and where the spirit of community thrives. I love Gulfport for its colors, its art, its quirkiness, and its unfailing ability to make me feel at home.Thank you, Gulfport, for being the canvas on which I paint my life. With love and gratitude,Shelley

Why I Want to be Gulfport’s Gecko Queen for 2024-2025I discovered Gulfport when I spoke at the Silver Threads conference on St. Pete Beach in January 2015. That July, I put 25 years of my life in Texas in the rearview mirror and drove a U-Haul with 3 cats and everything I owned to move to this quirky little beach town. It was love at first sight. I changed my email to “flsnowfrog” because, unlike Snowbirds who come and leave, I plan to croak here.Fast forward almost 10 years. I’m still in love with Gulfport and, most importantly, the people I now call friends. When I first arrived, I met all sorts of people as Gulfport Painting Pro, an “OCD paint and design professional” who believes a new color on the walls is the fastest way to change your world. My lifelong Educator self put deep roots into the library as board president of the Circle of Friends, a founder of the LGBTQ Resource Center and as board president for the Center during its evolution into OUT Arts & Culture over the past four years. I attend City Council meetings because I take my role as a citizen seriously – and show up at pretty much every community event because I love meeting new people. I’m the PBJ Queen for my church’s Friday Sunset Suppers for the unhoused. What a way to get to spend retirement!Last and not least, while I have had the privilege of time, skills and the passion to work for years on these projects, none of it was done alone. THAT is what makes Gulfport so special, and why I hope you will allow me to be your ambassador to the world as your Gecko Queen for 2024-2025.YAY, Gulfport!

I'm already Gulfports Tomato Queen so why not 2 Queens in one? I've been a Gulfport resident and married since 1996. I own the Funky Flamingo in Gulfport. I have been very involved in the Gulfport Merchants Chamber and I am a member of the Gulfport Lions Club. Our food pantry feeds many local neighbors in need! Let's continue our neighborhood support! I feel I can represent Gulfport and our wonderful qualities that Gulfport has to offer! Anyone that knows me knows that I devote 100% to my causes! Let's keep Gulfport Funky! LGBTQ friendly & family. Straight too. Love is love regardless no matter who you are!
