About the August 10th film: In this 2015 inventive, independent Canadian film, a closeted Newfoundland teen named Oscar (Connor Jessup) dreams of becoming a special-effects makeup artist, and is terrified of his macho father finding out the truth about his sexuality. His fear is magnified by his recollection of a brutal act of homophobia he witnessed in his earlier formative years. When Oscar becomes attracted to Wilder (Aliocha Schneider), a handsome and worldly co-worker at the hardware store, he is forced to confront his fears. Also starring Isabella Rossellini, voicing the role of Buffy the hamster, to whom Oscar confides all! The film won the Best Canadian Feature award at the Toronto International Film Festival. (Not rated)
Save the date for the next film in the monthly series: Thursday, September 14th. Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker star as an elderly lesbian couple of 31 years who are threatened with separation by family members who think one should go into a nursing home. Instead, they flee together on a road trip to Canada where same-sex marriage is legal. Along the way, they encounter a young hitchhiker who has much to learn from the couple. Poignant and hilarious!
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
