GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, November 9th with a classic comic Australian “drag show road movie.” The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages.
Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming the titles of films in general press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information at the Library’s Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL.
About the November 9th film: In this crowd-pleasing, hilarious 1994 favorite, drag queen Anthony (Hugo Weaving) agrees to take his act on the road, inviting fellow cross-dresser Adam (Guy Pearce) and transsexual Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to come along. In their colorful bus, named Priscilla, the three performers travel across the Australian desert performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. A “roaringly comic and powerfully affecting road movie.” (Rolling Stone) (Rated R)
Save the date for the next film in the monthly series on Thursday, December 14th. With never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and 90s, this 2012 documentary tells the story of the ACT-UP and TAG activists as they pushed to expand the boundaries of AIDS treatment, transforming the disease from a death sentence to a manageable condition. “A compellingly watchable portrait of a battle fought under that most memorable rallying cry: ‘Silence = Death’. Bravo.” (The Observer) (Not rated)
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
