GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, June 8th with an iconic 1983 film in the lesbian genre. This month’s film will also feature guest speaker Rob McCabe. This is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages.

Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming the titles of films in public press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information at the Library’s Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL.

About the June 8th film: Linda Griffiths stars in a classic film in the lesbian genre as a wife and mother whose life evolves after an affair with a female college professor. John Sayles directed the film which was considered groundbreaking for the era in which it was released. Rated R.

As part of a full slate of LGBTQ Pride Month events, the film this evening will feature remarks and an introduction by Gulfport resident and self-described “armchair film historian” Rob McCabe. Mr. McCabe is a recent graduate in the Creative Writing low-residency program at the University of Tampa. He has written several plays, short stories and poems as well as two screenplays. He has read his work publicly in a variety of venues, including the Library and Gulfport’s Blueberry Patch.

Save the date for the next film in the series, Thursday, July 13th. This independently-produced “broad comedy” stars RuPaul’s Drag Race season six winner Bianca Del Rio (Roy Haylock), as school teacher Richard, fired from his job in a small Texas town after community members discover he is gay, which is still legal under Texas law. He returns “in disguise” as his drag persona Bianca to wreak havoc on those who have discriminated against him. Also starring Rachel Dratch, Alan Cumming, Margaret Cho, Lola Botha and RuPaul.

Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
