GULFPORT, FLORIDA: A special performance of the one-man show, “Keith Haring: Radiant Child” will be staged in Gulfport on Thursday, June 29th at the Catherine Hickman Theater (5501 27th Avenue South) at 7 p.m. Actor Chad Jacobs portrays famed gay artist Keith Haring. An added bonus will be Jacobs creating some of Haring’s iconic artwork live throughout the performance. With plenty of humor and with lots of heart, the play will inspire you to share your gifts wherever you can, whatever they may be. The play is directed by Christopher Rutherford and was written by Jeff Norton.
The hour-long play will offer a taste of what shaped the history and style of Haring’s work, but playwright Jeff Norton delves even further, giving thoughtful insight into the motivations and the creative process of one of America’s most prolific and financially successful painters.
Tickets are $20 per person for general admission; or $25 per person for a limited number of special Early Access tickets, allowing entry to the theater 30 minutes early, an hors d’oeuvre reception and preferred seating. A cash bar offering premium wines, as well as beer and other beverages will be offered to all. Tickets are available at the Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South), Gulfport Casino (5500 Shore Boulevard) and Gulfport Beach Bazaar (3115 Beach Boulevard South). Early Access tickets are available exclusively at the Library. The show is presented by the Gulfport Public Library’s LGBTQ Resource Center. A portion of event proceeds will benefit the Center, as well as HIV/AIDS programs at Metropolitan Charities of Pinellas.
Chad Jacobs (Keith Haring) is and actor and illustrator living in St. Petersburg. He currently works for Feld Entertainment and has performed with Studio Shakespeare in a number of plays.
Christopher Rutherford (Director) is an actor, director, stage manager and technician who has worked with many of Tampa Bay’s professional theatre companies. Rutherford himself portrayed Keith Haring in “Radiant Child” in 2012 at freeFall Theatre.
Jeff Norton (Writer) was a dedicated theatre artist and educator who dazzled Florida audiences for decades with his comedic ability, his physical prowess and his lofty imagination. His performances were always heralded and his talents seemed endless. Sadly, Norton was murdered in 2010, but Theatre Tampa Bay continues to honor his legacy through grants for up and coming artists. There is also a scholarship in his name for graduating theatre students at the high school where he worked. Norton performed the premiere production of “Keith Haring: Radiant Child” in 1992 at The Tampa Museum of Art.
