The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, March 1st with THE HANDMAIDEN, a film heralded as a modern-day cinematic work of art.  The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.  Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center.  Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages.  Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South).  Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About THE HANDMAIDEN (2016):  From acclaimed South Korean director Chan-wook Park, set in 1930s era Japanese-occupied Korea, the film is part crime thriller, part lesbian erotic love story, in which a female pickpocket takes a job as handmaiden to the niece of a rich book collector.  The handmaiden is drawn into a plot with an accomplice who wants to claim the niece’s fortune.  Things become more complicated when the handmaiden begins to fall in love with the niece.  The film, based on the popular British novel “Fingersmith” by Sarah Waters, has received accolades as a modern cinematic work of art.  “Go see it. If you love cinema at all, go see it.” Detroit News (Not Rated – Adults Only)

NOTE: The monthly film series ordinarily takes place on the second Thursday of each month, but for March only will take place on March 1st due to an event scheduling conflict on March 8th.

Save the date, Thursday April 12th, for ORIENTED (2015).  This fascinating documentary follows 15 months in the lives of three gay Palestinian men and their female friend residing in Tel-Aviv, pursing equal civil rights.  “There is a strong camaraderie within this quartet, and though director Jake Witzenfeld’s film focuses on the complexities of what it means to be a gay Arab man who is also an Israeli citizen, it is the easy rapport among these friends that humanizes the film and elevates it beyond its point-and-shoot aesthetic.”  Chicago Tribune (Not Rated)

Upcoming films in the series include: NO SECRET ANYMORE: THE TIMES OF DEL MARTIN & PHYLLIS LYON (May 10th), REEL IN THE CLOSET (June 14th) and GIRLS LOST (July 12th).  Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
