The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, December 14th with the Oscar-nominated documentary HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages. Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE: With never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and 90s, this 2012 documentary tells the story of the ACT-UP and TAG activists as they pushed to expand the boundaries of AIDS treatment, transforming the disease from a death sentence to a manageable condition. “A compellingly watchable portrait of a battle fought under that most memorable rallying cry: ‘Silence = Death’. Bravo.” (The Observer) The film was Oscar-nominated for Best Documentary Feature. (Not rated)

Save the date for the next film in the monthly series, CLOUDBURST on Thursday, January 11th. (Rescheduled after cancellation in September due to Hurricane Irma.) Oscar-winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker star in this 2012 film as a lesbian couple of 31 years who are threatened with separation by family members who think one should go into a nursing home. Instead, they flee together on an adventurous road trip to Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. Along the way, they encounter a young hitchhiker who has much to learn from the couple. Poignant and funny! “A life- and heart-affirming journey.” (Toronto Star) (Not Rated)

Upcoming films in the series include: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (February 8th), and THE HANDMAIDEN (first Thursday this month only: March 1st). Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
